In D.C., the first question you're always always asked without fail (after your name) is: "So, what do you do?" It's inevitable. I complain about it, and then do it myself. Your career and identity as a whole are indivisible in this city. So when people ask me that now and I say "I stay at home with our baby"...well, it's often a conversation killer. I don't blame them - it doesn't invite follow-ups and it's hard for me to elaborate succinctly. But if I could, I think I'd just show everyone videos from this hilarious mom.
My day starts something like this, if I'm foolish enough to try to get back in bed once I've gotten Mollie up:
...and it's still my favorite job.
Anna, love love love your blog. And you're right, being asked and asking "So...what do you do" is such a D.C. thing.
