Memorial Day

I like traditions a lot. And I really like doing things that I know will become traditions. So today was a good day.

Will and I started our Memorial Day with a late (late) breakfast at La Madeline. I know it's a chain restaurant of sorts, but I love that place. It feels like some French family's dining room, and the food is delicious. The one humble suggestion I'd make is that they stop printing the calories next to food item...it's sort of depressing. I don't need any self-awareness when I go to get my croissant!

After that, we decided we wanted to go to the cemetery in Old Town. I've always had affection for cemeteries [my sisters and I used to call them "grave gardens"], and I knew that it would be a different experience to visit one in such a historic area of the country. This one had a separate section for those who served in the military, and it was fascinating to see that the markers denoting Civil War graves almost outnumbered those for the World Wars. Will and I brought a bouquet of roses, and laid a rose at certain graves that we picked out. Some were geographical (Ohio and Michigan), others historic (a women serving in World War I, not as a nurse), others sentimental (a husband and wife who both joined the military during World War II), and all helped to remind us of the individuals who we honor today.

Thank you to all who have served, are serving, and will serve our country.

  1. What a neat idea...Can I be your daughter? Can we make that part of your wedding so I can have your traditions too?
