I'm a country girl. Kind of. I'm from a small town surrounded on all sides by cornfields as far as the eye can see. I didn't grow up on a farm, but many of my friends did, and my mom has a shockingly strong affinity for sheep, donkeys, cows, and especially goats. [She always wanted a goat...but I'm not sure how our black lab, Henry, would have handled that.] The county fairgrounds are half a mile away from my house, and I grew up sincerely believing the "Greatest Fair On Earth" emblazoned on the side of the grandstand. I understand 4-H, snow days because everyone lives on dirt roads, and how to distinguish the hay bales of Amish families from the other kinds.
All this to say, I really love country music. I know it's not sophisticated [though I would argue that it has better harmonies and melodic structures than most popular music], it's sometimes unbelievably cheesy, and there's a lot of very simple themes. For example, Will likes to point out the mentions of "beer", "cold beer", or "ice-cold beer" in almost every song. It's true. But you know what? Bier ist sehr gut. And so are God, family, and America, which is the real point of most country songs. If they're not hip, at least they're true and good.
And so is Lady Antebellum's new cd...it's making me very happy while I'm editing. Here's a sample:
It helps if you pretend you're in the car driving to a bonfire after a football game, if you want to maximize the cheesy factor. And I don't know why you wouldn't.
