kek!

[Note: I am simply going to copy and paste part of an email from my youngest sister, because it sums up exactly how I feel about wedding cakes. Also, she's awesome. And an amazing chef...and really funny. Ok, her turn.]:

I feel that the simple stuff is not only what a lot of people like, but what bakers do best, so the plain cake and buttercream will be most delish. I don't have as strong of feelings about the filling though. Her other options are things you don't like (cheesecake, lemon cream, raspberries, etc). But I also feel that fillings ought to be more substantial, not fluffy, and a lot of hers that I've had are like that. It's a textural thing; I don't like it when you're eating cake and it's like, "mm a light frosting! nice moist cake! more fluffy stuff? moist cake again? MORE FROSTING!?!?"

This is distressing. Here's what eating cake should be like: "mmm a fluffy frosting! The cake is so moist! nom nom this filling is creamy... what a natural progression! I'm ready to move back into lighter substances though... perfect! The cake and then frosting that follow make this cake-eating experience complete - what a symmetrical and palate-pleasing delight!"

You see.

Ciao dahling

[You see? Just awesome.]

And here are some pretty cakes that are making me happy:

I'm more of a flower than a fruit gal, but I love how the frosting looks like it was just slabbed on with a cake server in the last picture.

  1. Our cake did not have a filling but we did have to different kinds and the layers alternated - marble and lemon poppyseed. We just stuck to butter cream frosting, which the guests really appreciated, because it's delicious, unlike fondant. I really like the one in the second photo down - the yellow one.

  2. Oh my goodness...I LOVE poppyseed. That might have to be in the running!

Also, fondant's the worst. It's only fun on cake decorating shows, I think.

  3. This was ours: https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.530058771526.2036327.71501976#!/photo.php?fbid=530060952156&set=a.530058771526.2036327.71501976&type=1&theater

It was so delicious. Make sure someone saves you a piece - we only took the first bites then had to go keep talking to people, and then it was all gone. :(

  5. Picking a cake is hard, because you have to get it all right: taste, texture, look, etc, etc. We went with white cake or marble (depending on the tier) and buttercream frosting. It was basic, but perfect for us. For the grooms cake we had chocolate with chocolate frosting, and to make all the cake special, we served vanilla ice cream slices with each piece of cake. We saved the top tier for our first wedding anniversary. Don't do that. It tasted like the freezer! :(
