foreshadowing

Remember what a big deal crayons were? There you were, with your Crayola box of 48 or 64, happy as a clam. You could't ask for anything more. Then, your deskmate shows up for the first day of school with... HOLY MOTHER OF PEARL, SHE'S GOT THE 96 BOX WITH THE BUILT-IN CRAYON SHARPENER!!! Total [if temporary] devastation. I was always able to bounce back pretty quickly though, because in all honesty, there were only two crayons for me. The other 62 [94?!?!] were just there to make these look good. I'm talking about robin's egg blue and salmon pink. And don't even get me started on their wimpier counterparts: sky blue and tickle-me-pink. Mere washed-out versions of these beauties.

I could get into the fact that my love of both of these colors may have reflected my struggle to balance my dual tomboy/princess nature. But I won't. The reality is, I was just thinking about childhood toys [what with all the babies being born!], and then crayons, and then thought about how much I used to love those colors. Then I realized a funny thing. They've followed me into the grown-up world. This duo is all over my apartment, and I didn't even realize it.

Ha...and this one was definitely unconscious:

[Umm...and apologies to anyone who loved sky blue and tickle-me-pink.]
