I've been having so much fun watching the Olympics the past few weeks! Patriotism + athleticism = a good time (and the fact that it's always on, even during middle-of-the-night feedings, definitely doesn't hurt). Today I watched women's bobsled and couldn't help but laugh at something Will had said.
Backing up: in college I competed in track and field. Specifically, I threw the hammer. In case you're picturing people chucking household tools, it actually looks more like this:
My senior year went really well, and I went to Nationals and became an All-American. It was so much fun! Shortly after Nationals I got a Facebook message from someone named Elana Meyers. She explained that most Olympic bobsledders came from other sports, and that they simply looked for athletes whose event required speed and strength...and apparently throwing the hammer qualified. She invited me to try out for what would be the 2014 Olympic team. I obviously didn't. I was tired, quite frankly, and had been abusing my body for the past four years. I was ready to take a break from the gym. I wanted to come to DC to be with Will, instead of move to Colorado and train with strangers. And she had probably sent that same email to hundreds of better athletes than me :).
So it's become an inside joke over the past few years, with Will joking about me giving up my Olympic dreams and a glittering bobsled career. But when these Olympics actually started he turned to me and said "You know what would have happened if you had actually decided to do that? You would have trained for three years, and then Lindsey Vonn would have injured herself and the US would have lost their biggest celebrity, so they would have needed another big name (pretty face) to draw endorsements, and Lolo Jones would volunteer, and they'd say 'sure, why not?'. And with a few months to go they'd give her your spot, because she'd draw more viewers. But that didn't happen to you!.....It happened to someone else."
So to whoever Lolo did kick off, I'm sorry. Maybe we'll see you in 2018? And congrats to Elana Meyers and the rest of the team on the silver and bronze! Now it's time for some figure skating.
I love this little anecdote!
