I will not be decorating my house with this.

Every once in a while, it's kind of fun to stop browsing Ikea and World Market and other budget-friendly places, and just look at what you'd buy if money were no object.

And then it gets un-fun and slightly depressing.

Just kidding! (Kind of.) I like to think of it as research. I'm basically finding ideals, and then can have a clearer idea of what to look for or make in a more responsible price range. One of my favorite places for such research is High Street Market - they reel me in with reasonably-priced tchotchke (basically all of their brass table decorations are awesome gift material), and then slay me with art and furniture beyond my reach.

It looks like everything I have my eye on right now is either blue or gold...or both. Of course.

For example. We'll start off with fantastic coasters (+2 points for both blue and gold) that I wouldn't normally consider, but seem irresistible as gifts.

A pillow that would make me smile when I made the bed with an absolutely world-class font.

I want this for the nursery so much it almost hurts...I love things that are in the sky on ceilings. Speaking of, my mom painted wonderfully realistic clouds on our bedroom ceiling when I was little. She's so cool! (I'm having these realizations constantly as I get closer to being a mom.)

I mean why not. I can't think of a place in my house where I wouldn't want this. Sure, I can probably find a similar mirror somewhere else, but this is the mirror-ness of this mirror (yes, that's how my classes about Plato have been distilled at the moment.)

This! I thought that I wanted a black and white nautical scene until I saw this in all its colorful glory. The idea of this dominating the space above our couch makes me very happy.

I can't believe I just called this research. But help me out! Where do you like to look for either daydreaming or real house furnishing? Bonus points if it's online...that means I'll actually be able to take advantage of it before 2014.

  1. Terrain has really great sales sometimes, and they always have flawless taste. Check Michele Varian (a shop in NYC that also has a website), because they have awesome stuff (and the owner is a sweetheart who makes amazing pillows!). 1st Dibs is another good one, though you really have to hunt because that stuff can be pricey. One King's Lane, of course, for accessories and furniture. And sometimes C Wonder has knockoffs of designer things. Oh, and let's not forget my favorite Jonathan Adler! Pricey, but sometimes they have fab sales.

    1. I was just on Terrain today...it makes me want to forget normal (necessary) furnishings and just get tons of terrariums. :)

  2. I shop West Elm. They typically have modern mixed with classic peices and always usually have things on sale! ....Love dem sales. Sometimes Urban Outfitters does me right, but they're usually a bit too funky for my taste to shop there regularly.
