someday files - piano

Thanks to Pinterest, I have a good list of things I'd like in a "someday" home. Bigger kitchen, a den, a backyard, etc. would all be nice. But for now, I just want the little extra room that we'd need for a piano.

Growing up, we had a lovely baby grand in our living room. All three of us girls learned how to play (for many years, but at different levels...I think Clara and I would both agree that Gracie left us in the dust). From the days of practicing scales with quarters on the back of our hands for posture, to hilarious, frantic trios with us all trying to fit our long arms and legs on the slippery piano bench, to pretty competent renditions of Bach, Mozart, and Debussy accomponied by Henry (Hank) the black lab, the piano provided a soundtrack for our house.

One of the very best things to do was to lay under the piano while someone else was playing. If you laid on your back with your hands (and maybe feet - forget dignity) on the unfinished underside of the piano, you could feel the vibrations through your whole body. It made me appreciate music in a completely new way.

Plus you could grab the player's feet as they used the pedals down there.

Now I'm not delusional - a baby grand is out of the picture for a long time. But a little white upright would make me oh-so-happy. I mean, we have to get Darcy to the point where she could do duets with Henry!

  1. I have been having this exact wish! Almost as soon as I had an apartment to furnish I realized it would be incomplete until we had a little piano.

Gracie totally left us in the dust.

  2. Our house came with a piano. The previous owner didn't think he could get it out of the house, nor did he want to try. So he said: "Mind if I leave it?" And we said: "Not at all." It is very out of tune and many of the keys are chipped, but it's there! Someday, we'll get it fixed up and make use of it again.

  3. You guys are both ahead of me...Maria, since you already have one (Debbi Wyse at the college can give you the name of a great tuner when the time comes!), and Clara, since you could actually fit one in your place :).
