Oscars 2013 recap

Just to shake things up (and end things on a high note), I decided to go from bad to good this time. [Also, I would like it to go on the record that instead of sitting on the couch for three hours straight while judging dresses and eating chocolate pudding, I polished our silver candlesticks...while judging dresses and eating chocolate pudding. So productive.]

BLECH

For the life of me, I can't understand why anyone would go with this unflattering, outdated neckline/material. I mean, did she look at Taylor Swift and say "Yes! That's exactly what I'm envisioning!"? I also have liked various other ways she's styled her short hair more, but I appreciate that she keeps changing it up. And her necklace, though beautiful, was all wrong with the straps of the dress in the back...too busy.

Renee Zellweger generally gets on my nerves (in our personal conversations, of course). But again, what's with the weirdly unflattering bodice? Looks completely top-heavy. And I don't know what's going on with that hair, but maybe it's just a bad picture where the wind picked up.

Thought: If your ex-boyfriend's rumored new girlfriend is one of the most-buzzed-about actresses of the night, you want to bring it. However, I don't think Zoe Saldana's flowers, laser-cut hemline, bow heels, and heavy belt are going to make Bradley Cooper sigh with regret. It's just confusing.

MEH

I really really like Kerry Washington's dress! The color is fantastic. I just wish it wasn't wrinkly, and that she had done something with her hair. It looks flat and helmet-like, which is expecially sad because she rocks beautiful curls on her tv show all the time.

In retrospect, I'm not sure why I liked this. I think I just gave Samantha Barks a free pass because I love Eponine so much, and I'm proud of her for holding her own as the only non-movie star in the bunch (though obviously her Broadway cred is more important. But still, I felt like the premiers must have gotten annoying when your co-stars are getting all the attention).

WOWZA

Naomi Watts in my favorites for the second award show in a row! This dress was so cool - I thought for a second it was a bit top-heavy. Then I told myself to be quiet and accept that it was the most original on the red carpet and looked lovely. The two don't often coincide.

Awwwww. I loved that JLaw has sufficiently proven how tough she is, and was like "And now, I'll be an old-fashioned Barbie princess." Actually, it was probably more like "Let's prove to these jokers that I can be a lady now that I'm supposed to be Miss Dior, or whatever. I just took a shot." And that's fine too. Because it worked. It somehow looked even prettier when she tripped collecting her Oscar. And I was particularly smitten with her earrings, and the gorgeous backwards necklace:

And, since there are no rules here, I also get to include her dress for the Vanity Fair after-party:

Because OMG.

All of my Jennifer Lawrence love aside, Amanda Seyfried was actually my favorite of the night. The lilac-gold combo was so perfect, the neckline worked on her frame, hair and makeup were high-style and lovely. Is she even wearing jewelry? I don't know, and it doesn't really matter. Loved this.

Who'd I leave out?

  1. I agree with the anne hathaway comments.. seriously what was she thinking! Amanda Seyfried was stunning.. And in my books JLaw can do no wrong..

  2. I agree with you about everything except Amanda's dress. Yuck. The semi-asian neckline, the excessive embroidery... not doing it for me. Her hair is looking good though.

    1. Whaaaa?? It's just a halter neck! And I loved how the embroidery spaced out more towards the bottom of the dress...

  3. It made me think of those tight necked asian dresses that do the choker number... they make me shudder. And the embroidery made me think of curtains. BUT I will applaud the color and on second glance I am also all about her smolder eye make up.
