'Merica

You all know what today is. For some, it might just be the last day that you have to watch political ads during your TV shows. Maybe the last day before you take off your candidate's bumper sticker, and can breathe a sigh of relief that you don't have to worry about your car getting "accidentally" rammed [if you think I'm kidding, come commute in D.C.]. It seems like every other person is fed up with the amount of political talk, and ready for things to go back into hibernation for another four years.

But you know what? I think it's good. I'll complain about the facts in the ads, but not the fact that the people around me are forming and voicing opinions, and maybe want to talk about that instead of celebrity gossip (I mean, "in addition to". I can't let that go altogether.).

Politics shouldn't be a dirty word. It shouldn't be something we ignore, and then get mad at every few years. Because we live in a constitutional republic, we are the government. And as someone clever and good has said, a true king cannot refuse his responsibility to rule. As American citizens, we have many privileges, and many responsibilities. One of those is to participate in this "great experiment" of self-government. We must participate, even when it isn't enjoyable. With any luck, the constant friction and work to understand and govern ourselves properly will perpetuate something beautiful.

I thought for a while about not explicitly making an endorsement. But this is my blog, and I can. And, following the logic above, I maybe should. So go Mitt!!

  2. Hear, Hear! I think that in the end it doesn't matter who you are voting for, it's the discussions and involvement that are important.

  3. Well, I'd actually disagree with that. It sounds nice, but if it doesn't matter who you vote for, why would the discussions matter? I think both are crucial :).

  6. Do you mean the elections? The candidates? I can't really think of a way that anything would always be the same...but I'm curious :)
