adventuring

There's something wonderful about being outside for enough hours to see this:

That gorgeousness was our backyard (or front yard) this weekend while camping with Dave and Jenna. We went down to the Shenandoah River State Park, pitched our funny matching tents, got a ton of water, and went hiking in the 90 degree weather along the river and through the woods. It was so fun to go adventuring with two people with whom we've shared so much, but normally in our crazy fast-paced D.C. world. No phones meant that these four busy people finally chilled, laughed about stupid stories, and had lots of good quiet time [being quiet with good friends is one of my absolute favorite things].

After we were all hot and sleepy from hiking we went back to camp and made a delicious dinner of cheese and crackers, brats, and veggie kebabs. We talked until it was dark, making s'mores and playing with headlights and acting like big kids.

The next day we decided to give our legs a break and work out our arms instead, with kayaking! We kayaked on the same portion of the Shenandoah River that we hiked. It was a long enough route to have time to be calming and exciting...we floated right up to a herd of huge cows standing quietly in the river, and effectively soaked everything we had going through some sweet rapids. So fun!

It was wonderfully contradictory; we got home sunburned, tired but rested, and exhausted but feeling strong. I can't wait for the next weekend like that.
