Academy Awards 2012 recap

First of all, I think the night can be best summed up with this:

Ok, Angelina.  Now that you have presented your freaky little leg at every opportunity, it's time to put it away.  And his looks better than yours.  But your dress is lovely.

Kristen Wiig in the most boring dress of the night.  Her hair looks fab, but nude tones have had their time, and she persists in making them hang around.  Be done.

And Michelle Williams, who has talked about how hard it is to balance all of the different characters you play with your true self, had a dress with an identity crisis too.  I know tons of people were swooning over it, but the peplum was completely the wrong length (or needed to be assymetrical), the bow is bizarre and disproportional, and the ruffles on the skirt look like four different people sewed them on without looking at each other.  Also, a pink clutch.  Why?

Ok now to things that made me happy.  This dress made it seem like the whole world has been holding their collective breath until Jessica Chastain wore something good...and they were all pretty pumped to be able to breathe again.  It's cool, but I mostly loved her makeup and hair.  Beautiful, beautiful lady.

Oh my goodness I do NOT like Gwyneth Paltrow.  But girl rocked it last night with a fantastically sculptured Tom Ford.  And showing up with a freaking cape made it seem like everyone else just hit an "easy" button while getting ready.  I'm shocked that I like this so much, but you can't argue with the fact that she was one of the only ones with true style - imagination and execution.

Penelope Cruz also seemed sort of random last night...normally there's a bigger quadrant of "vintage Hollywood" girls, but she was holding down the fort alone.  It was lovely, and that color is divine.

YES.  Octavia Spencer, relative newcomer that she is, looked like a pro last night.  This is how you dress to flatter your body.  So simple, so smart, so good.

Rose Byrne still has her super-chic bob, but has ditched the pantsuit that made her legs look about 2 and a half feet long.  I still wasn't sold on this sequin number (mostly thinking "please get her to the after party so she can eat one of Wolfgang Puck's cheeseburgers")...

But then I saw the back.  Sweet!  The skinny strap is totally unexpected.  And the shorter length of the dress, which didn't really work in the front, looks so cool from behind.

My MVP for the night, however, might have been Emma Stone.  This may have to do with the eagle-belt dress she wore for the Golden Globes, or her totally hilarious presentation with Ben Stiller, but her dress certainly helped too.  Not revolutionary, but certainly not boring...great with her hair and skin tone...way to go.

And this has nothing to do with dresses, but everything to do with attractiveness.  Look at this gem I stumbled across!

I would have loved to see that conversation.

I mean hear it.

[I mean see it.]

  2. Yes - that last photo is one of those times when I would give anything to be a fly on the wall. Or, just, there in person. :)
