For the last 12 years of my life, I've worked out almost every day. For the last four of those, that usually meant 2-4 hours in the gym everyday (I still love you, track!). Now?.......not so much.
I maintain that I'm still tired from those 12 years. But to be honest, I'm pretty sure I'm just experiencing what it's like to not have to work out for the first time, to not have coaches and teammates holding you accountable, to not have definite competitive goals to work for (and yes, I can end sentences with prepositions when I'm not at work). This is a discouraging situation, and so far I've been handling it a bit like this:
Self 1: Hey! Let's go work out! Remember how good it used to feel?
Self 2: No. I remember how much it used to hurt. Pass the chips.
Self 1: No no...it was fun! And we even have a gym in the basement of our apartment building...it's so convenient!
Self 2: And the salsa, please.
Self 1: Oh, so you're ignoring me? Fine, I'll make it more tempting. We can even watch semi-trashy TV while we work out to help pass the time!
Self 2: Grey's Anatomy is not trashy you take that back!!!
Self 1: I'm sorry.
Self 2: (munch)
Self 1: Ok, I know running really kind of sucks when you haven't done it in a long time, but that's no reason to avoid it altogether. If we run a little today it'll make running tomorrow that much easier!
Self 2: (munch)
Self 1: Fine. I'll resort to threats. I didn't want to say this, but you look like you might be putting back on those pounds you lost this summer. I don't want you to feel bad about yourself but...
Self 2: (gasp!) Fine! I'll do it!
Self 1: Finally! Wait...where did all the chips and salsa go?
Self 2: Ummm....
Self 1: You ate them all?!? We can't run right after eating all that!
Self 2: Oh goodie...let's watch Grey's on the laptop in bed instead.
aaaahhhhahahahaha! I love that this is EXACTLY the same monologue that takes place in my own head....the only exception would be replacing chips with ice cream
ReplyDeleteHA! Ditto Robison. Oh, the good old days of running. I've been "preparing" to run for about a week now. I'll keep you posted on my progress ;)
