walkabout

"It's a dangerous business, Frodo, going out your door. You step onto the road, and if you don't keep your feet, there's no knowing where you might be swept off to.”

J.R.R. Tolkien, The Fellowship of the Ring

One of my favorite things about the daily walks Mollie and I take around Old Town is eyeing all of the beautiful townhouses in our neighborhood. I especially love seeing the various paint and landscaping treatments people give their doors! I don't know if it's a result of only ever having apartment doors to call my own (uniform, unpaintable, etc.), but I spend a good bit of time daydreaming about our first "real" front door.

And in the meantime, Mollie pretends not to know me while I semi-surreptitiously snap photos of strangers' front doors.

  1. I have such a door obsession. One time I announced to James that I wanted to take pictures of all the Capitol Hill doors and arrange them in a giant COLOR WHEEL OF DOORS to which he responded: "Listen... there's only so many of your projects that I can muster full excitement for and I think I might have to sit this one out."
