All pictures from my Instagram...I think.
We had a cookout for lunch (which segued into dinner) at our friends' house. There was good food, lots of babies, a bubble machine, and a dramatic reading of the Declaration...a pretty ideal celebration. It's still sad to be away from family on holidays - we would have loved to be marching in the Hillsdale parade to support Dad! But afternoons like Friday make me appreciate having friends who function as family, complete with inside jokes, hands always willing to help with kids, and stories that have been told for at least ten years.
After dropping Darcy off at home (she would not have enjoyed the fireworks - the coward) we went to the Capitol to see the show! You guys, I don't know how to articulate the normal 4th of July weather in DC. This is an appropriate time to remember, again, that we built our nation's capital on a swamp. A swamp that, in the summer, is regularly over 100 degrees with about 1,000% humidity. That said, when I stepped onto the balcony of the Capitol to a breathtaking sunset, an amazing orchestra performance, and low 80 degrees with a breeze I almost cried. The setting couldn't have been better. Mollie mostly liked bouncing on the marble, but the fireworks caught her attention during the finale and she did her classic flail-all-limbs-to-show-enthusiasm move until the end.
We rounded out the weekend with Breakfast at Wimbledon (which traditionally means danishes and mimosas in Hillsdale, but this year meant coffee, leftover 4th of July cake, and forcing a love of tennis on Mollie at a young age). Federer and Djokovic are my absolute favorites, and while we wanted Fed to win, I couldn't even get upset when he didn't. Fantastic tennis and two classy gents.
I hope you all had a wonderful Independence Day and holiday weekend! I'll leave you with the aforementioned reading of the Declaration:
[Upon watching this again I feel compelled to note that the babies, at least, were not smoking cigars. 'Merica.]
