Met Gala 2014

As established last year, I'm a big fan of the Met Gala having a theme. My knowledge of Charles James, the subject of the new Met Costume Institute's exhibit and inspiration for this year's gala, comes entirely from a few Vogue articles. So I probably should keep my opinions to myself.

But lack of expertise has never stopped me before. Onward!

In my limited research, I quickly learned that the most iconic example of Charles James' work is displayed in this photo by Cecil Beaton:

From this, I expected our stars to all don high-drama, intricate, sculptural ball gowns. There's nothing scary about that! No reason to flake like you did last year if "punk" was too intimidating for you! So it completely baffles me that Emma Stone wore this, for example:

I just don't get it. She has a stylist who should help her out with things like that. Wear this to the SAGs! There were, of course, other offenders...but they were less attractive and I don't want to get you down. Let's just look at the fun dresses. As previously implied, my categories last night basically boiled down to "not poofy enough" and "suitably poofy." I present to you (without further commentary) the best odes to Charles James:

[Ok one little commentary: no surprise that the models killed it, and I can't believe I'm including TSwifty in a "best-dressed" list.]
